Dear A###, I don't know whether you will take it in kind sense or not, but i really wish to enlighten you and the world about Tipping and the Bribery , and that it is Bribery which is fundamentally hurting to the society, not the tipping.   The laws pertaining to 'prohibition' on tipping are basically the bye-laws ( e.g. 'circular", departmental orders) but nothing of a statutory laws passed by any Parliamentary body, which are the law of the land.    Bye-laws or even the Parliamentary laws can be contested, as the need arrive, if somebody is being wronged because of such a law. As an employee of a any organization, our submission to such a law is NOT the ultimate proof of legitimacy of the bye- laws. People accept the submission for economic compulsions as well. Dear Capt Leboffe: I am writing this mail to express some thoughts I have in my mind after attending the seminar. I was initially intending to talk to you about my promotion, as to what are the company plans on this. There was a collective meeting organized with all mates, masters, second engineer and chief engineers in a room, which I had also attended. Here is a summary of inferences I could draw up on this meeting and the seminar as a whole . In the room, the most common question that people sought to know was about the promotion policy and its sincere implementation. Even when already in know of the standard answer of the company, which is ‘three recommendations from three different masters’, I think the more discreet question people wanted to seek was – what?, if the aspirants are finding it hard to obtain the three recommendations. I will word it like--- 1)there was one and only one Ram, 2) perhaps none of us can rise high to become another Ram. 3) even as Ram remains unsurpassable, we all still admire Ram. We still strive to emulate him. 4) We despise Ravan. In principle, this debate again turns into a fight between Idealist and the Realist. Ram is the Ideal, while Ravan is the Real. It is sorely needed to be appreciated that it is our attempt to emulate Ram that we all are expected to follow by norms of our society. Our struggle to emulate - the Hypocrisy in another sense - is a human need. The corollary to this would be that Hypocrisy and ‘Struggle to emulate’ are inter-twined concepts.
